Eco Means Ecology and Economics

Going green? Show me the money...

Kim JonesHere at Sun we talk to our customers daily about eco responsibility and what that means from a technology perspective. Customers want to investigate what they can do to become more responsible corporate citizens by reducing their carbon footprint, but they also want to know how it can save them money.

We think companies can do both.

We've been working with one of our government customers, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA), and they have managed to cut costs and are on target to cut their carbon emission footprint by 260 tons per year — ahead of schedule. (Click here for a full success story of the RPA's eco responsible system).

The Rural Payments Agency is an executive agency of the U.K.'s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The agency's primary and strictly regulated responsibility is paying more than £1.6 billion to farmers in the form of land and other subsidies. The RPA has additional responsibilities such as completing rural inspections and tracing the movement and lineage of livestock. Like all DEFRA agencies, RPA has a keen focus on environment-friendly, sustainable business practices.

The business issues faced by the RPA are not just applicable to the government sector. Like many organisations, the RPA needed to reduce total cost of ownership for their PC desktop environment, and increase IT flexibility while reducing administrative burdens and meeting environmental regulations.

Going Green with Sun Ray Thin Clients
So, how did they do it? They replaced their thick client desktops with a Sun Ray thin client environment. The new system provides added data security and reduces the time needed to apply software updates. This solution enabled new application rollouts in days instead of weeks, and this meant some new applications could be incorporated sooner than anticipated.

Using a DEFRA calculator to compare the Sun Rays to thick clients, the agency discovered it will reduce its already low carbon footprint and will eliminate two three-year PC technology refresh cycles in addition to electricity savings of £174,000 annually based on lower power consumption and cooling costs.

Sun has developed a number of services to help our customers with planning and implementing a sustainable computing environment, so don't hesitate to get in touch and we'll do what we can to help your company save money and energy.
