Sun HPC Stars in U.K. Cosmos Research

Durham University Advances Knowledge of the Universe with Sun HPC Platform

Kim JonesIt is clear that our two-way dialogue with customers in the U.K. and Ireland is paying off by enabling us to zero in on customer needs with solutions that tackle real-world IT and business challenges.

This month I would like to show you a great customer example, Durham University, and how they are using Sun's high performance computing (HPC) solution to help advance knowledge of the universe. Part of Durham University, the Institute for Computational Cosmology, is an international center for researching the origin and evolution of the universe.

Since 2000, the center has run simulations that help quantify the dark energy that makes up 80 percent of the cosmos to determine what happened during the formation of the universe. The results of this fascinating research are expanding our knowledge and contributing to plans for a new satellite that will map the universe in more detail than ever before.

Cost-Effectively Increasing Compute Power with HPC
Sun have worked with Durham to provide an HPC environment that cost-effectively increases computing power to help scientists continue this advanced research. Sun's HPC solution is delivering 4.2 teraflops of processing power with compact and energy-efficient Sun server clusters running the Solaris 10 Operating System, Sun grid and cluster software, and Sun development tools.
