This month I would like to highlight the well known U.K.-based charity Comic Relief, and how they are using Sun technology to handle and track charitable donations.
Comic Relief uses comedy and laughter to fight poverty and social injustice throughout the world and raises about £60 million each year in part through highly publicised fundraising events.
Altogether, Comic Relief brings in more than £4 million on Red Nose Day, a huge live fundraiser televised throughout the U.K. The large volume of transactions that take place during the 12-hour event requires a highly scalable and reliable IT infrastructure.
Multithreaded Sun SPARC Enterprise T2000 servers and other Sun technology play a major role in the success of Red Nose Day and other Comic Relief initiatives. In the past, Comic Relief used paper for transactions and waited months to get all the money raised on Red Nose Day. Now, with a Web-based application that processes donations in real time, Comic Relief can get all the money raised on Red Nose Day within three days.
Boosting Efficiency and Saving Energy and Space
Working with Sun, Comic Relief have simplified donation methods to boost overall efficiency, speeded up manual donation transaction processes, increased capacity to handle large volumes of data, and saved energy, space, and IT maintenance costs. The Sun SPARC Enterprise T2000 server was selected specifically for its energy- and space-saving capabilities.
Reliability is another advantage of using Sun technology. "We have not had any issues with our Sun equipment at all in the entire time we've used it," says Martin Gill, head of New Media, Comic Relief. "Because of the reliability and scalability of their products, Sun has played a role in the overall success of our fundraising efforts. They've helped our IT network operate reliably so we can concentrate on the job of raising money."
At Sun, we develop the most innovative products and services that power the network economy. Comic Relief is a great example of how we are helping customers in this new network economy as well as focusing on communities and the environment.
