Console Servers

Console Servers provide secure remote access to servers and IT infrastructure equipment. They can be used to monitor, manage and troubleshoot any equipment that uses a serial management port (servers, routers, switches, PBXs etc.) –even if servers or networks are down.

Applications:

Any server or IT equipment that supports a console or serial management port can be managed remotely and securely from any location, using the same interface and capabilities as available locally. In-band access is available through dual Ethernet connections for both public and management networks (using telnet or SSH). Out-of-band access can be achieved through a local general purpose RS232 terminal or remotely by dialling in through the optional PC card plug-in modem.

Hardware Features:

The Console Servers are available in a 1U rack mountable package with 8, 16, 32 or 48 RS232 device ports, one RS232 setup port, and two 10/100Base-T network ports. The product line offers single or dual AC or dual DC power supply options, and a plug-in PC-Card modem option for dial-in access.

Easy to Deploy and Use:

The Console Servers provide a comprehensive suite of features allowing quick setup and deployment, with typical “box to operation” times of less than 10 minutes. A front panel LCD with keypad, “Quick Setup” web interface and a command line interface (CLI) setup script are all available, as well as more detailed web-based setup screens and CLI for the advanced user. The comprehensive online help system includes context-sensitive information during configuration and operation. Access to the Console Servers device ports is accomplished via Telnet, a web page launched console client or SSH, with no proprietary software required.

Integrated Security:

The console servers are fully customisable and offer secure encryption and authentication. Authentication is provided via LDAP, NIS. RADIUS. Kerberos or TACACS+. SSL and SSH provide encryption. Per port user permissions and a packet filtering firewall enhance security further.

Management:

The Console Servers provides a high level of management flexibility, offering both local and remote access. The 256K FIFO buffer for each device port gives administrators a 400+ screen audit trail to assist in troubleshooting events with mission-critical servers. Port buffer scanning may be configured to generate e-mail notifications with string recognition and RegExp support. The Console Servers, in normal operation, are a "listening" device that accept console messages and place them in a FIFO buffer. The user must put the system in "Direct Mode" to communicate with a server. Inadvertent and unintentional communication with the server does not take place. The units are designed to never send an unintentional break signal.

Cables and Adapters:

Each unit comes with one 2m RS232 cable (with RJ45/DB9/DB25 terminations) to allow a serial connection to the setup terminal port.

Complete console cables options are available in 2m, 5m and 15m lengths with RJ45, DB9 (Female) and DB25 (Male) connectors. Alternatively, separate cables (2m, 5m and 15m) and adapters (DB9, DB25, and RJ45 connectors in male, female, DTE and DCE formats) are also available.
