Greenfoot: Invent-Program-Share

Developed by The University of Kent together with Deakin University in Australia, Greenfoot is a programme specifically designed for K-12 students.

By simplifying Java code, the Greenfoot team have created a platform on which students can learn Java programming concepts in a fun and engaging way. Particularly useful for programming exercises that have a visual element, it is the object visualisation and object interaction in Greenfoot that are the key elements of it's success.

The Greenfoot team based its design on an environment that was flexible and could be customised for each specific group of students, ensuring that every interest could be addressed. The customisation aspect of the programme, enables the teachers themeselves to modify and extend the programme framework depending on the level of commitment and motivation from the students.

In recognition of the project and it's positive impact in schools and colleges, Greenfoot and the Greenfoot team from The University of Kent, were presented with the Dukes Choice Award at JavaOne 2007 by James Gosling, for 'Java Technology in Education'.

Java a Scuola

Sun Microsystems, the Italian Ministry of Education and the Java Italian Association have created a new educational program designed to increase and enhance the programming skills of students.

As the use of Java technology continues to grow, the Italian education authorities are keen to ensure that students are equipped with the Java technology skills that are demanded by the employment market.

Aimed specifically at those aged between 15 and 18 years old, Java a Scuola's objectives are to:

  • reduce the digital divide.
  • improve the use of new technology in schools.
  • help students to learn transferable skills that will enable them to meet the real expectations of the outside world.
  • enhance the quality of teaching by applying multimedia technology.

Literally translated as 'Java at School', Java a Scuola offers teachers a comprehensive course package, with Sun providing the CD-ROMS and online training materials needed to ensure that the students have all the resources they need at their fingertips. The course can be incorporated into the general IT curriculum, as well as being used as an extra-curricular activity.

A new education project for Italy: Java a Scuola.

The program takes approximately 80 hours to complete, with an industry recognised certificate awarded after successful completion of the course.

As well as learning skills that can be transferred beyond the school walls, the program hopes to encourage the next generation of programmers to innovate and explore new technology.
