Sun's Open Archive Solutions: Scalable, open archive technologies use less space and energy, make archiving accessible to everyone.

By Lisa DiCarlo

28 February 2008 - Until recently digital archives were needed only by transaction-intensive and data-dense computing environments such as multi-national banks, research institutions and film studios, but they are quickly becoming a key component of almost every enterprise storage strategy. “Today's IT organisations face three major archiving challenges”, says Dave Kenyon, Sun's Vice President of Storage Product Management and Marketing Operations, “storing the exploding amounts of data generated on the network, holding huge amounts of data long enough to comply with burgeoning government regulations, sometimes forever, and being able to efficiently search and retrieve that data.” He adds that those same organisations are all working with a shrinking budget.

Sun is expanding its set of archive offerings of disk, tape, software, solutions and services, bringing the “rocket science” of enterprise archive to more organisations than ever before. The new Sun StorageTek SL3000 modular library system, the Sun StorageTek T9840 tape drive and the Customer Ready Content Infrastructure System (CIS) 3.0 multi-tiered storage archive appliance were each designed to be efficient, cost-effective and ecologically responsible. In addition, Sun has now open-sourced the Sun StorageTek 5800 System, so organisations can customise their storage software to meet their specific needs.

“Nobody does archiving the way Sun does”, says Kenyon, “whereas other vendors require proprietary software and hardware, we offer an open solution that gives you a very intelligent way to use a variety of disks and tape drives, and we offer many flavours of all of them.” Sun archiving solutions allow you to customise your organisation's storage configuration with Sun CIS or with the newly open-sourced Sun Honeycomb StorageTek 5800 System.

With Sun's scalable, efficient and open digital archive solutions, businesses can change the economic equation for their IT departments. These offerings are as much as ten times more scalable, have as much as a 50 percent smaller footprint, and can reduce energy costs as much as ten times that of competing products. Add the Solaris ZFS file system, and organisations can build the most manageable, intelligent and secure digital archive.
